Frequently Asked Questions  Su’a Sports Psychology

“How do you help athletes?”
My purpose is to help athletes perform to the best of their ability through the application of mental skills training. Some of the things I teach individuals are:

  • How to discover their motivation for performance?
  • How to remain in control when the pressure is on?
  • How to let go and trust your performance?
  • How to remain confident when the results aren’t what you expected them to be?

I also specialize in character development particularly with business professionals, high profile athletes and performers. The pressures of the media, fans, and expectations can take its toll on ones core values.

Once you get to a certain level you will notice that almost everyone has the same physical ability as you do,  and that’s where your mental game becomes the difference between being good and being great.“Do you ever decline people?”

Yes. I hope that doesn’t scare you. I am a performance consultant. I don’t help individuals with clinical depression, eating disorders, or other clinical needs. I specialize in mental skills training to enhance performance. If I sense that I am dealing with something I am not trained for, I will be more than happy to refer you to someone who is.

I also work with individuals who are committed. Just like going to the gym to build muscle, it also takes work to build mental muscle. Individuals will not see progress if they are not practicing what we train for. Uncommitted individuals have a tendency of looking for the quick fix and therefore don’t persist in practicing the strategies I teach them; this usually results in discouragement in their training, and a loss of trust. I would hate for you to spend your time and money on something that you are uncommitted to doing.“When can we start?”

I work on a first come first serve basis. If I have an opening we can start immediately. If my schedule is full,  you can choose to be put on the waiting list or I can refer you to some outstanding consultants whom I highly respect. As you will see, I put a lot of time and effort into my clients and in order to best serve you I keep my clientele to a limited number so that I can give my best to each person.“Will working with you make me better?”

Mental skills

Mental skills training will not guarantee success any more than building muscle, eating right, or practicing long hours on your particular sport. While these things are great and will put you in the position to achieve desired results, engaging in these things don’t necessarily mean that you will attain a certain batting average, professional contract, or Olympic Gold Medal.

While I cannot guarantee performance outcomes (no one can), I can tell you that these principles are targeted to enhance focus, confidence, intensity, poise, and your ability to remain in control during adversity. Developing these skills through practice will help you get out of the way of your own performance and allow the results to take care of themselves.“How many training sessions does it take to see results?”

It depends. I’ve had athletes that have worked with me once, and I’ve had others whom I train on a very regular basis. It’s completely up to the individual. Also, you will always hear me repeat the phrase, “focus on the process, and let the results take care of themselves”.

Do you work with youth?

Yes! Learning these skills at a young age gives them a great advantage as they progress. I also make sure to help them see how these skills can help them in the home and in school.
